About GigShield.us
29.8 million Americans now work as freelancers, rideshare drivers, delivery dashers, or independent contractors. Most insurance comparison sites are built for traditional employees. GigShield exists for everyone else.
Why We Exist
The gig economy created a massive insurance blind spot:
- โ Personal car insurance is voided when you accept a rideshare or delivery request
- โ Platform-provided coverage (Uber, DoorDash) only kicks in during specific periods
- โ Freelancers have no employer-sponsored health insurance
- โ 1099 workers have no employer disability or worker's compensation
- โ Most insurance comparison sites treat gig workers like W-2 employees
GigShield compares insurance specifically for the realities of gig and freelance work โ including platform-specific coverage gaps, contractor liability, and the income volatility that affects underwriting.
Our Review Methodology
We map exactly where personal insurance ends and platform insurance begins for each gig type. Period 1, 2, 3 for rideshare. On-call vs delivery for food delivery. Active job vs idle for freelance.
We test rates using realistic gig worker income profiles ($25K-$80K with 1099 income), not standard W-2 baselines. Underwriting differs significantly for variable-income workers.
Gig work is seasonal. We weight insurers that allow monthly cancellation, pause options, and by-the-job coverage (like Thimble's hourly liability) for gig workers who don't work year-round.
Minimum A- AM Best rating. NAIC complaint ratio review. Special weight given to insurers with documented experience handling gig worker claims (rideshare-related incidents, freelancer professional liability, etc.).
